Celebrex Use

Celebrex is a prescription medication that's used to treat acute pain, osteoarthritis, menstrual pain in women, and adult rheumatoid arthritis.

How Celebrex works

Celebrex works by blocking the action of the COX-2 enzyme, which is responsible for causing pain and inflammation.

How to take Celebrex

Celebrex comes in two strengths: 100 mg and 200 mg tablets. Your doctor may prescribe more than one tablet per day depending on your condition. It's important that you take Celebrex exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The normal recommended dose for Celebrex is:

  • Acute pain - 400 mg initially, followed by an additional 200-mg dose on the first day if needed. On subsequent days, the recommended dose is 200 mg twice daily as needed.
  • Menstrual cramps - 400 mg initially, followed by an additional 200-mg dose on the first day if needed. On subsequent days, the recommended dose is 200 mg twice daily as needed.
  • Osteoarthritis - One 200-mg dose once a day or one 100-mg dose twice a day.
  • Adult rheumatoid arthritis - 100 to 200 mg twice a day.

Celebrex precautions

Do not take Celebrex with aspirin. Taking Celebrex with aspirin can increase your chances of developing stomach ulcers. Also, do not take Celebrex if you:

Are late in pregnancy.
  • Are allergic to celecoxib, the active ingredient in Celebrex.
  • Have had allergic reactions to certain drugs called sulfonamides.
  • Have experienced asthma or allergic reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAID drugs.
  • What to tell your doctor

Be sure to tell your doctor your complete medical history. Mention any kidney or liver problems, asthma, or pregnancy. Also, make sure your doctor knows about any nonprescription and prescription medications you are using.

    Celebrex side effects

In clinical studies, the most common side effects were diarrhea, indigestion, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, serious stomach problems such as bleeding can occur without warning.
